Kate & Kurt, Kate Brady and the Toad

Kate Brady

In honor of Stafford Youth Football B-Team’s Northern Division Championship, Kate donned my son Noah’s football gear for the show this week. My son only weighs 73 pounds, so it’s pretty impressive that she squeezed into it. Stafford won 22-16 over the undefeated regular season champion Tolland Eagles. It was a great game by both teams, Justin Grant led the offense and everyone on defense contributed. Come support us this Sunday 11/20/2011 at Tollang High School as we take on the Colchester Cougars in the NCFL Superbowl.
In other news, Kate and I will be hosting the Rotary Club Talent Show this Saturday night at the Stafford High at 7pm. Ed “The Toad” Dion filled in for Tocka with this week’s weather, I guess Tocka had a little too much fun in AC last weekend. The always entertaining Hillary shows us her best Elaine Bennis moves plus all the local news. See you all Saturday at Stafford High and Sunday afternoon at Tolland High!!

Kate & Kurt Hurricane Irene Edition

We filmed this week’s show from all around Stafford, there are still a lot of outages and debris scattered throughout town due to Hurricane Irene. We traveled to Village Hill, Leonard Rd, and Prospect St and filmed some of the damage. Tocka gives us his weather update for this weekend as well as the birthday’s and a special couple celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary, plus all your local news. Check out the video below.

Unicorns

Recently I was asked to write a blog about unicorns, so here it goes. I was unaware that unicorns were mentioned in the bible, so I found this little quip in wikipedia and I thought I’d share it. Also please check out the video below of Narwhals “The Unicorn of the Sea”. My daughter Hannah and I wrote a blog about them in January. It’s and endangered whale that lives in the Arctic and has a unicorn horn.

Biblical

An animal called the re’em (Hebrew: רְאֵם‎) is mentioned in several places in the Hebrew Bible, often as a metaphor representing strength. “The allusions to the re’em as a wild, un-tamable animal of great strength and agility, with mighty horn or horns (Job xxxix. 9–12; Ps. xxii. 21, xxix. 6; Num. xxiii. 22, xxiv. 8; Deut. xxxiii. 17; comp. Ps. xcii. 11), best fit the aurochs (Bos primigenius). This view is supported by the Assyrian rimu, which is often used as a metaphor of strength, and is depicted as a powerful, fierce, wild mountain bull with large horns.”[13] This animal was often depicted in ancient Mesopotamian art in profile, with only one horn visible.

The translators of the Authorized King James Version of the Bible (1611) followed the Greek Septuagint (monokeros) and the Latin Vulgate (unicornis)[14] and employed unicorn to translate re’em, providing a recognizable animal that was proverbial for its un-tamable nature. The American Standard Version translates this term “wild ox” in each case.

  • “God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.”—Numbers 23:22
  • “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.”—Numbers 24:8
  • “His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth.”—Deuteronomy 33:17
  • “Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?”—Job 39:9–12
  • “Save me from the lion’s mouth; for thou hast heard me from the horns of unicorns.”—Psalms 22:21
  • “He maketh them [the cedars of Lebanon] also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.”—Psalms 29:6
  • “But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of the unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”—Psalms 92:10
  • “And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with their bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.”—Isaiah 34:7

The classical Jewish understanding of bible did not identify the Re’em animal as the unicorn. Instead, the Tahash animal (Exodus 25, 26, 35, 36 and 39; Numbers 4; and Ezekiel 16:10) was thought to be a kosher unicorn with a coat of many colors that only existed in biblical times.

Kate & Kurt Interview with John McLaughlin

John McLaughlin

This week we filmed the 15th episode of Kate & Kurt at Basil’s Restaurant. I can’t believe we’ve done that many already, it seems like we just started. It all began with an idea, Kate’s idea, that we do something similar to Regis and Kelly or Better Connecticut with Scot Haney that showcases our wonderful little New England town. There are so many events, tons of sports, a very diverse art community, local bands, concerts, great local businesses, amazing people, and the list goes on. Well anyway, that’s how it all got started, I personally want to thank Kate for all the work she does, believe me when I tell you, this is a very time-consuming endeavor.

That’s enough sappy stuff, thanks again to Alex and Pete at Basil’s for letting us shoot there, head on down down every week day from 2pm to 5pm for Happy Hour, the atmosphere is great and the food rocks. We also got our weekly local weather report from Tocka and share some important info on upcoming events this weekend, including the Katy Waugh Bike Run this Saturday. My favorite part of this week’s show was our interview with MMA fighter John McLaughlin.

John grew up in Stafford and still lives and works here. He is fighting to defend his Reality Fighting championship belt this October 8th at the Mohegan Sun Arena against another young man who also grew up in Stafford, Jeff Haddad. Matt Bessette will also be on the card that night as he defends his championship belt as well. Hit the link here to see the interview we did with Matt a little while back——> Matt Bessette Interview. Watch the show below to see the interview with John. You can get tickets to the event from Matt, check at his website or friend him on Facebook (Matthew Bessette) or John. You can go right down to see John at Cumberland Farms in downtown Stafford Springs and get your tickets there. Good luck to both of them and let’s get out to support them in record numbers!!! I promised Matt 500 Stafford people so help me fulfill my promise.

Kate & Kurt with Rotary Instructions

We have covered it briefly in the past, but in this week’s episode we actually drive through the rotary in downtown Stafford Springs from all three directions. We shot the show from the beautiful public beach at Staffordville Lake and of course there’s Tocka’s weather report and some birthdays. A special appearance from Stephen Duzsa and all your local news including a local driver that got his first win of the season at Stafford Speedway. Watch this action packed show below and tune in next week as Truck Barrows joins the Kate & Kurt show!
