2011 Football Season is Here – NFL Poll

John Riggins

The 2011 football season is almost here and it’s my favorite time of year. Stafford Bulldogs youth football is looking forward to a great season. Our numbers are up from last year, and all the teams are looking to make the playoffs and compete for a championship. Coach Bernier’s Stafford High Bulldogs are returning a lot of starters from last year’s squad and look to have a winning record for the first time since the 1990’s.  They are loaded with athletes so let’s make sure we are up there on Friday nights rooting them on.

UConn football is coming off it’s greatest season in history with a BCS bowl appearance. They have a new head coach in Paul Pasqualoni and are setting their sights very high this year as well. I, personally, had the priveledge of playing for Coach P at WCSU in 1986, and if anyone can keep the Huskies heading in the right direction it’s him.

After a preseason lockout, the NFL is finally ready to play some football. Make sure you play Coach Vail’s click your picks every week of the season and win some great prizes by picking the winners of each week’s games. Paradiso Insurance intern Kevin Smith and myself will be making the picks as well and sharing our thoughts on each week’s games plus a recap of all the local action each week.  Please let me know who you think is going to win Superbowl XLVI this year.

2011 Coach Vail’s Click your Picks

Football season is here, finally, and practice has begun for the NCAA, NFL, and even for the Stafford Bulldogs youth football. High school practice begins next week. On a local level we are pretty optimistic at the youth and high school levels. I will be an assistant coach for the B-Team this year and my son Noah will be on the team. We will be starting “Coach Vail’s Click your Picks” for the first week of then NFL season.
It’s a fun competition that will take place every week where you pick the winners of the games and if you do well you can win prizes to local businesses. We had a great time with it last year and look to improve on it this year. I look forward to working with Paradiso Insurance intern and Stafford native Kevin Smith on making it bigger and better.
The highlight of the competition was shooting the videos with my picks for the week. We went to local businesses and asked local residents there opinions, it was fun. Check out two of the better videos that we did last year below. You can see all of the videos, the links are on the right side bar, stay tuned!

The History of the Superbowl

Green Bay

Pittsburgh

Congratulations to the Packers and the Steelers on their victories last weekend, and also congratulations to Ben K. and Jamie T. for picking them. They both won $10 gift cards to Express Wireless. Thanks again to our friends at Judy’s Country Store, Express Wireless, and Basil’s Restaurant who participated in the Coach Vail’s click your picks video last week. A lot them picked it right.

I thought with the Superbowl coming up I’d post a brief history of the game’s origins and all the results of every Superbowl. All the information was gathered at http://www.superbowlhistory.net/superbowl/scores.php. It’s interesting info, check out how your team has done over the years.

Both teams in Superbowl XLV have storied pasts. Green Bay has been in four Superbowls, winning three and losing one. They won the first two Superbowls ever, under Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, and went to back to back Superbowls in the nineties giving Brett Favre is only Superbowl victory.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the winningest team in Superbowl history, having won six times while losing only once. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (2 wins) in trying to catch up to his legendary predecessor Terry Bradshaw (4 wins) in all time Superbowl wins. It should be a great game. Stay tuned for information and more “click your pick” videos in the next two weeks leading up to the Superbowl.

The History of the Super Bowl

The history of the Super Bowl starts with two things: the merging of the American Football League with National Football League, and a bouncy rubber ball.

The NFLAFL World Championship Game was created as a piece of the merger agreement between the NFL and the AFL in 1966.

During the negotiations between the NFL and the AFL, Kansas City Chief owner, Lamar Hunt, thought of the name “Super Bowl” for the Championship game, after observing his daughter playing with her toy Super Ball. Hunt only meant the name to be a stop-gap until the powers that be could think of something better. Not having thought of one, the game was named “The NFL-AFL World Championship Game“.

The first Championship took place in 1967. With the official title being quite a mouth full, the fans as well as the media took to the short, unofficial name, Super Bowl. In 1969, the name, “Super Bowl” became official.

The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls convincingly, causing many people to question if the AFL teams could compete. The very next year, the New York Jets upset the Baltimore Colts for the AFL’s first Super Bowl Title. The Chiefs won the 4th Super Bowl, evening the record at 2-2.

In 1970, the NFL and AFL merged into one combined league with two conferences, which resembles today’s National Football League. Three NFL Teams joined the 10 AFL teams forming the AFC (American Football Conference). The remaining 13 teams from the old NFL formed the NFC (National Football Conference).

Since the construction of the combined league, former AFL teams have won 10 Super Bowls while original NFL teams have taken 23. Two Super Bowls have been won by teams created after the merger.

The Winner of each Super Bowl receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after Vince Lombardi, the great coach for the Green Bay Packers who led his team to victory in each of the first two Super Bowls. Following his death, the trophy was named prior to Super Bowl V in his honor.
