Spring Sizzler 2012, Great Weekend for Locals

Kyle Casagrande in Victory Lane

The 41st Annual Spring Sizzler is in the books and it was a great weekend for local drivers with at least 1 driver from Stafford finishing in the top ten in all six feature events. Many were on hand this cool and windy weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway, including my children and I, to witness the “Greatest Race in the History of Spring”. On Saturday, Stafford natives Kyle Casagrande (pictured above) and Albert Saunders finished first and second in the Dare Stock feature. Cory Casagrande placed second and David Arute fourth in the Limited Late Model race and Bob Charland finished sixth in the SK Light feature.

On Sunday, Woody Pitkat made his way through traffic to finish ninth after getting tied up in a crash midway through the SK Modified race. Woody also had to pass many cars en route to a second place finish in the Late Model feature after starting deep in the field. J.J. Hill looked strong as well finishing ninth. In the final race of the day, the 200 lap Modified Tour feature, Woody finished with an impressive eighth place finish. He started 20th and made it up to as high as fifth. Overall, it was a great weekend for our local Stafford drivers. Make sure to visit Stafford Speedway this Friday night, it’s only $17.50 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 14. See you there.

Interviews with Local Drivers from Stafford Speedway

Cory Casagrande #1

Kate, my son Noah, and myself were lucky enough to be invited to watch some local drivers gear up for an exciting new season of auto racing at Stafford Motor Speedway. This is just a small preview of what you will see on The Inside Line with Kurt Vail on MyStaffordSprings this coming race season. We caught up with Cory Casagrande (pictured above) who had three featured wins in 2011, his rookie season in the Limited Late Model division! Kyle Casagrande is looking for a track championship in the DARE stock division after posting 5 feature wins in 2011. We, also, chatted with “Magnum” Mike Bennett who will be competing in the SK Modified division full-time in 2012. We will showcase these Stafford drivers as well as many more in the weeks to come, don’t miss it! Don’t forget the Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway on April 28 and 29, 2012. Watch it below.

The excitement started Friday night at Stafford Motor Speedway when Kyle Casagrande took home his fourth win of the season in the Dare Stock feature. He worked his way through field as he started 10th. Also, 5-time Late Model series champion Ryan Posocco passed fellow Staffordite Woody Pitkat to pick up his first win of the season. Ryan is currently in first place in this years’ standings as well.
Not only did Woody finish second in the Late-Model race Friday night but he picked up a tenth place finish Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the Whelan Modified Tour race. It was a great top ten finish as Woody picked off car after car after starting 22nd. Also in New Hampshire, Charles Lewandoski finished 22nd in the Nationwide Series race. It was an impressive finish for the rookie driver in a race won by NASCAR great Kyle Busch.

Bobby Santos III

An exciting weekend of racing concluded with Bobby Santos III winning the 40th Annual Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway last Sunday. It came down to the wire as he edged out #93 Rowan Pennick. Stafford’s Woody Pitkat finished with an impressive top-ten finish. Ryan Preece won the SK Modified feature and Keith Rocco (Kid Rock) won the Late Model race. Saturday’s winners were Joey Cipriano in the SK Light, George Nocera in the Limited Late Models, and young Kyle Casagrande of Stafford took home the Dare Stock trophy. Another Stafford resident had a very impressive showing as #09 Chris Matthews finished second in th SK feature with a very impressive pass of all-time great Ted Christopher. Look for him to have a great season.

Kyle Casagrande

It was beautiful weather and great racing. The action will pick up again this Friday as its the opening night for all five series. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids.

Stafford’s Charles Lewandoski racing in Richmond

Charles Lewandoski

Stafford native Charles Lewandoski will be racing again this Friday night in the Nationwide Series in Richmond. He will be driving the Go Green #39 in the Bubba Burger 250 at Richmond International Speedway this Friday @ 7:30pm, televised on the Speed Channel. Chalew got his start right here at our very own Stafford Motor Speedway being the youngest driver to record a feature win at the age of 16 back in 2002. Despite his busy schedule, he took a few minutes to answer a few questions for me.

Kurt: “So far this year you’ve finished in the top 25 both times you’ve raced the complete race, what is your goal for this weekend in Richmond?”

Chalew: “Really, the main goal is to have a smooth and uneventful weekend and finish in the top 20. Any time you go on the track your goal is to win the race, but I think we’d be very happy with a top 20 finish.”

Kurt: “Have you ever raced at Richmond before?”

Chalew: “No. It’s a little tricky from what I’ve been told, but there are some similarities to tracks I’ve raced in the past, so I will try to piece together my experiences from two or three other tracks and that should help alittle.”

Kurt: “What makes Richmond different from the other races you’ve raced this year?”

Chalew: “It is a short track, anything under one mile is considered a short track, and the other races were a similar distance but obviously the shorter track has more laps. On the shorter track the driver has more input, on the bigger tracks has more to do with the car. I think it will be easier than my first time racing at California, which is two miles, because I’ve raced at short tracks all my life.”

Kurt: “You have a lot of support here in your home state. As you know racing kicks off this weekend in Stafford with the 40th Annual Spring Sizzler. Do you have any predictions?”

Chalew:”Sure, I’m hoping for Kyle Casagrande to win the Dare Stock, Limited Late Model, Cory (Casagrande). Ryan Posocco or Magnum Mike(Bennett) to win the Late Model. Ted Christopher to win the SK and Shayne Prucker to win SK Light. And I think Bobby Santos III is going to win the tour race.”

Kurt: “Thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule and good luck Friday night.”

Chalew: “Thank you, and I’m going to try to make it home this weekend to see Kyle and Cory race, maybe I’ll see you down at the track.”

It’s going to be a big weekend in racing right here in Stafford. Go to staffordmotorspeedway.com for all the info and ticket prices. Sunday morning at 11:00am is a meet and greet with all the drivers and their cars in the infield that is included with the price of admission. It’s a great event as I can vouch for personally, my kids had a blast last year. I will be down there all day Sunday with my camera, so keep an eye out for me and be in my next Inside Line video. We got Chalew’s picks for this weekend, now tell me who you think is going to win and either win a $15 ticket voucher to Stafford Motor Speedway or a $10 gift card to Express Wireless, just click this link ——–> Sizzler Survey.
