Washington Redskins Team Name and Logo
Harry Reid and many other U.S. Senators recently sent a letter to the NFL suggesting that they force the Washington Redskins to change their team name as it may be offensive to Native Americans. I think this is just a politic stunt for Mr. Reid, who is not a Native American, to see himself on the news. He, also, has not done the research on this topic, which Redskins Team President, Bruce Allen has. Please read the letter from Mr. Allen to Senator Reid attached below, with all the research and statistics involved with the team name and logo. This is another example of the government over-stepping. I am a Redskin fan myself and have been since I was young. 1877, Chief Crazy Horse of the Oglala Sioux Indian tribe surrenders to U.S. Troops in Nebraska. He lived a very interested life before meeting a questionable demise in a Nebraska while trying to imprison him. Read more about him here—> Chief Crazy Horse
1889, the Eiffel Tower is officially opened in Paris to the public, it was built as an entrance way to the 1889 World’s Fair. The Eiffel Tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world. I went there on a school trip in high school, I only went to the second level because the elevator wasn’t running, even from there the view was amazing.
1937, The German zeppelin Hindenberg catches fire and crashes in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The huge vessel was destroyed in one minute, 36 people died. I’ve attached a video of the event below.
1954, Roger Bannister became the first person to run the mile in under four minutes. Hicham El Guerrouj is the current men’s record holder with his time of 3:43.13.
1998, then 20 year-old Kerry Wood, of the Chicago Cubs, strikes out 20 batters in a nine inning game to tie Roger Clemens MLB record. 1788, Maryland becomes the seventh state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, Connecticut was the fifth state to ratify on January 9, 1788. Maryland‘s state motto is Fatti Maschii, Parole Femine, translated “Manly deeds, womanly words”. Their state bird is the Baltimore Oriole and state flower is the Rudbeckia Hirta.
1792, France invades the Austrian Netherlands, now Belgium, beginning the French Revolutionary War. Just writing the word “Belgium” gives me a hankering for some waffles!
1869, Chinese and Irish laborers for the Central Pacific Railroad lay ten miles of track in one day, a feat never been done before. That would probably take a month now with 100 times better equipment.
1914, Willis H. Carrier patents the modern air conditioner. This is something we will be very thankful for in the months to come.
